David Hurley has a dream to end homelessness.

David is 11 years old and, like most fifth graders, he likes video games and hanging out with friends. Unlike most kids his age, David also knows what it feels like to be homeless. “Me and my mom and my brother lived in a shelter for five months,” recounted David during an interview on June 23.

Though his family is doing, the experience of living in a homeless shelter impacted David in a way that many of us would find hard to believe. David did not become angry or confused, he became compassionate and thoughtful.

One day while he and his classmates were learning about economics, David was struck with an idea to raise money and donate it so that other families wouldn’t have to be homeless. With help from his teacher, principal, and mom, David initiated a yard sale at Fruit Valley Elementary School. He collected items from local churches, neighbors, and secured a storage area to hold the items until the day of the sale. David involved his classmates who drew posters to hang around the school advertising his great event. After weeks of hard work, David raised $135! But he didn’t stop there. He presented his project to the local Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and inspired them to give as well.

On June 23, David Hurley presented a check for $185 to Second Step Housing.

We Thank David for his dedication and compassion.

Make David’s Dream Come True

Second Step Housing challenges our community of individual supporters to help make David’s dream come true by matching David’s gift of $185.

With 48 gifts of $185, one family can receive two years of service-enriched housing and gain the tools needed to reach self-sufficiency.

If an 11 year-old can accomplish this so can we!
