Do you provide emergency housing?

We do not provide emergency housing, but we can provide you with contact information for local emergency housing resources. For more information, see the Housing Resources page. (back to top)

How do I apply?

If you are interested in Second Step Housing, you will need to fill out our transitional housing application and return it to our office with income verification and proof of homelessness. You can call our office to have an application emailed to you or you may pick one up at our office at 2500 Main Street, Suite 120. (back to top)

What are the qualifications?

To qualify for transitional housing, you must be a single woman with no more than two children or a single woman with no children. You must have some sort of legal income in order to pay rent; you must be homeless and you must be clean and sober. (back to top)

What do I need to do to apply?

You will need our transitional housing application filled out completely as well as income verification and proof of homelessness. Proof of homelessness can be a written statement from someone with whom you are staying or from a professional with whom you are working or it can be an eviction notice from your landlord. What if I have a husband/boyfriend?

You may only apply for yourself and your children (1 or 2 children only). Our transitional housing is a group living environment for women and children and boyfriends/husbands may not live in the houses. Applicants that are accepted in our housing may spend the night elsewhere from time to time with approval from their case manager. (back to top)

What if I have more than two children?

We are not able to accept a mother with more than two children due to limited space in our housing. (back to top)

What if I don’t have my children now, but am trying to get them back?

If you are working to reunify with your children, our housing is viewed by the courts as a safe place for them to live. We have had many mothers reunify with their children once they were accepted into the program. You may apply without your children; there is space in the application to explain what your situation is and what your goals are regarding your children. (back to top)

How long does it take to get into your housing?

Once we receive your application, it takes 1 to 3 weeks to process. If we have openings in the program, you will receive a call to come in and interview. If we are full, you will receive a letter in the mail explaining that there are no openings at this time, but that we will keep your application for 90 days. If you do not get into the program within the 90 days and you are still interested, you would then need to re-apply. (back to top)

Is there a waiting list?

We do not have a waiting list. If we do not have openings at the time that you apply, we will send you a letter explaining that, and we will keep your application for 90 days. If you do not get into the program within the 90 days, you would need to re-apply in order to be considered again. (back to top)

Is the housing safe for me and my children?

We are very protective of our residents, and there is no violence, drug or alcohol use, or any other dangerous behavior accepted in the houses. It is a safe, supportive environment for women who are working toward becoming self-sufficient. Anyone who is not on track with that will be asked to leave. (back to top)

I don’t want shared-living. Can I apply for my own housing?

Our transitional housing is all shared living, however, you may wish to get on the waiting list for our permanent housing. For more information, please call Aurora Place Apartments at 360-604-2187. (back to top)
