Women Helping Women

Women Helping Women Mentoring Program

Our adult mentoring program matches Second Step residents with community women who provide companionship, encouragement, and role modeling. Mentors and mentees regularly meet casually to socialize. Second Step, or the mentors as a group, may also occasionally coordinate group activities for mentors and mentees to share.

Yards and Gardens

In the transitional housing program, Second Step Housing residents share housing in apartment complexes, duplexes and homes. Many residents in the program have no home maintenance, yard care or gardening skills or experience. The Yards and Gardens program matches volunteers with a passion for gardening with small groups of ladies to help guide them in planning, planting, caring for and harvesting their garden bounty. This is a rewarding experience that also touches upon nutrition, meal planning and food storage.

Empowerment Workshops (Social)

Many residents begin the program without basic life skills. Second Step Housing offers structured courses in budgeting, housing, parenting, etc. As the residents learn and acclimate to a new life, there is also opportunity for celebration. Volunteers for the Empowerment Workshops assist in planning the themes, invitations, logistics and get to participate too! From Bunco and bowling to seasonal wreath making, every month offers a fun, interactive workshop open to all SSH residents to relax, learn and be around others who support them in their journey.

Fitness Instructors

In striving to foster and sustain self-sufficient women with a healthy mind, body and soul, Second Step Housing is going to offer a Fitness Program to our residents. Free Saturday morning Fitness Classes and an upcoming Training Program for Run Like a Girl will be provided. If you are a certified Fitness Instructor, you can make a huge difference with a very small time commitment. We are seeking certified Volunteer Fitness Instructors with current CPR/First Aid training to teach a one hour class every 4-6 weeks on Saturday morning. Please contact Andy Orizotti, Fund Development, at aorizotti@secondstephousing.org if you are interested in teaching a Fitness Class or in helping with our Training Clinics for our Run Like a Girl 5K.

Seasonal Assistance

We periodically need volunteers to help with various tasks, especially before large events or donation mailings. Contact Andy Orizotti in fund development at 360-993-5301 or aorizotti@secondstephousing.org for more information.

Marketing Assistance

Collaborating with businesses, individuals, and non-profits organizations in the community is vital to finding resources we need to continue our work. If you have expertise in marketing, energy, and ideas, please contact Andy Orizotti in fund development at 360-993-5301 or aorizotti@secondstephousing.org for more information.

Other Opportunities

We are currently seeking a volunteer(s) to organize our "In-Kind Donation Program".  We ask that volunteer(s) are able to commit at least 2 hours/week to organize incoming donations and " resident need requests."  Please contact Andy Orizotti in Fund Development at aorizotti@secondstephousing.org if you love to organize and are interested in this volunteer opportunity. If you have a particular interest or skill and would like to discuss with us how it might help Second Step operations or our residents, please contact Andy Orizotti in fund development at 360-993-5301 or aorizotti@secondstephousing.org for more information.
