How Second Step Helps
Second Step Housing offers safe homes paired with the training and structure needed for success.
Second Step Housing began in 1996 under the name YW Housing, and since then, we’ve continued to grow to meet the needs of the community.
- 1996—1 house serves 3 women.
- 1999—4 houses serve 12 women and their children.
- 2005—Kauffman Town Homes are built, adding 10 units of permanent housing.
- 2007—Aurora Place Apartments are built, adding 25 units of permanent housing.
- Today—11 houses, 36 permanent units, and education resources serve over 400 individuals yearly.
Case Management
Case managers work one-on-one with residents, guiding them to:
- Develop individualized goal plans,
- Earn a living-wage job,
- Reunify their family, and
- Achieve permanent housing.
Life Skills Training
Many residents begin the program without basic life skills. Second Step offers:
- Tenant/rental education courses,
- Budgeting and credit resolution classes,
- Parenting classes,
- Self-care and nutrition programs, and
- "Emplyment Matters" program.
Mentoring
Women Helping Women mentoring program partners volunteer women from the community with women in transitional housing, resulting in powerful friendships and community connections.
